Can't make this up. Said at the dinner table, out of the blue when talking about first day of school and friends.
"I don't want to call Dad retarded, because then I would be insulting all the retarded people. He is so far beyond retarded, I need to make up a new category. And I know you hate me using that word because it is disrespectful to retarded people and their families and you don't want me to cuss, but I don't know how else to describe him to my friends so what am I supposed to do?"
I almost choked on a piece of chicken and had to remove myself from the room.
I couldn't let him see me laugh so I had to go upstairs.
What the hell do you say to that?
I just came down the steps calmly, sat down and said, "You know, lets just continue to focus on how your first days of school went."
This is going in my journal for sure.

Insightful child you have there. He doesn't suffer fools gladly, and sees the truth for what it is. He must get that from his mother. You made the right decision by defusing the situation and not engaging in the low hanging fruit of the situation. But, man, what a kid!

my DD11 has gotten used to the stupid crap x pulls all the time.
I really try not to say anything negative about him (which isn't easy), so eventually I started saying "the lord has special plans for your father. or the lord watches out for people like your father."
One night she was complaining about his latest crap, and I said "I wonder why he did that?" She looked at me and said "because he's an asshole mom." (this kid never swears.)
Life goes on.

OMG WhyOh...DS11 said that too! Especially when I explained to him why we had to change orthos during the braces fiasco. He didn't buy my story, figured out the truth pretty fast, and out it came.
It was SO HARD not to comment tonight. Which is why I had to remove myself.
DS17, however, added his 2 cents.
I love preteen and teen boys. They call 'em like the see 'em.
And you're right TCM: they don't suffer fools gladly.
Which is why they have refused to talk or see their father since he walked out on April 1.

My DS14 said something similar on Sat.
He told me that while he was at a the high school football game with friends a girl came up and was crying. They all asked her what was wrong. She said it was personal stuff but that basically her dad was causing problems.
DS14 evidently said to her "if it makes you feel any better, my dad's an asshole too"
I wasn't as good as you - I laughed out loud! But, I then quickly changed the subject to how everyone else reacted to what he said. He said it broke the tension - at least for the boys and she seemed a little better. So, maybe this is just the way teen boys handle the situation.
I definitely won't but I would love to be able to share your DS's comment with my DS14. I think he would truly relate to your DS!

I love this thread...kids are the best comic relief.
I have a funny one to add from this evening.
Went for my nightly walk at the highschool track across the street. Knew Wh would be making his nightly call to the kids while I was gone. Got home and DD(11) said, "I told Dad I was watching the boys for you, and HE said, 'WHERE IS YOUR MOM?' I told him "the track" but what I REALLy wanted to say was,
"She's at the club, Dad" Bwahahahaha....she delivered that with just the deadpan dry humor that you'd expect.
I love these kids...

My kids are older and so they are aware of so much. Once my daughter was mumbling something and I asked her what she was upset about and she said "Oh, you know...Dad's got his panties all in a bunch again. It's time he bought some big boy pants."
